Jesus is mentioned several times in the Quran than Prophet Muhammad is an indication of his superiority over Prophet Muhammad. By Ustaaz ITOPA, SADIQ OBIYO

Jesus is mentioned several times in the Quran than Prophet Muhammad is an indication of his superiority over Prophet Muhammad.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Allah, the Dependable God, says, “those who reject (Truth), among the People of the Book and among the Polytheists, were not going to depart (from their ways) until there should come to them Clear Evidence.[1]

He, Allah, continues: “And they have been commanded no more than this: To worship Allah, offering Him sincere devotion, being true (in faith); to establish regular prayer; and to practice regular charity; and that is the Religion Right and Straight.[2]

It is therefore sardonically ridiculous that despite this clear and simple commandment of God as present in both Qur’an and their book, the Christians engage themselves with this fiddling issue. Notwithstanding, the question, as jejune as it is, can be responded to thus:

WHY IS THE NAME JESUS (PBUH) REPLETE IN THE GLORIOUS QURAN

A lot of controversies, misunderstandings, mis-presentation of facts etc. trail the personality of Jesus (PBUH) and his mother, Mary. Below are some of the wrong beliefs of the people of the book in respect to Jesus (PBUH) and his mother, Mary:

·        According to the Christians Jesus (PBUH) and Mary are Gods.

·        According to the Christians Jesus (PBUH) is the son of God.

·   According to the Christians, Jesus (PBUH) didn’t prophesize the coming of Prophet Muhammad.

[1] Al-Quran, Sura 98, verse 1

[2] Al-Quran, Sura 98, verse 5

·   According to the Christians, Jesus (PBUH) didn’t prophesize the coming of Prophet Muhammad.

·        According to the Jews, Jesus (PBUH) was not a prophet.

·        According to the Jews Jesus (PBUH) is a bastard.

·        According to the Jews Mary was a prostitute.

·        According to the Christians Jesus (PBUH) has miraculous power of his own.

·        According to the Jews and Christians Jesus (PBUH) was killed etc

As for the Jews, Allah says, “they rejected Faith,  they uttered against Mary a grave false charge.[1]

As for the Christians Allah says, “their intention is to extinguish Allah’s Light with their mouths: But Allah will complete (the revelation of) His Light, even though the Unbelievers may detest (it)[2].”

To both the Christians and the Jews, “o people of the Book! There hath come to you Our Messenger, revealing to you MUCH that ye used to hide in the Book, and passing over much (that is now unnecessary). There hath come to you from Allah a (new) light and a perspicuous Book.[3]

From the above, the Jews and the Christians make a lot of lies against Jesus (PBUH) and his mother, Marry. The Glorious Qur’an hereby tells us that it’s here to tell us MUCH of lies they used to invent. Hence the need for more repetition of the name of Jesus (PBUH) and his mother, being the subject of the crucial discuss in the allegations to be refuted.

Also, several repetition of a particular name does not in any way mean superiority. If several repetition of Jesus (PBUH)’ name gives him superiority over Prophet Muhammad, would the Christians equally agree that Prophet Musa is better and superior to Jesus (PBUH)? This is because Prophet Musa’s name appears more than Jesus (PBUH)’ name in the Glorious Qur’an.

[2] Al-Quran, Sura 61, verse 8

[3] Al-Quran, Sura 5, verse 15

In addition, it is true of all languages that when you speak with someone, you don’t have to be calling his/her name repeatedly. Only the third person,, not the second, needs to be called for reference purpose. For example, a conversation between Musa and Ahmad goes this way:

Musa: oh Ahmad, I sent YOU to Idrees to collect my phone from him and Idrees told YOU that YOU should take it from his shop but YOU left without taking it from where Idrees asked YOU to take it from. It was when I called Idrees that he was telling me what he told YOU, so how do YOU expect me to blame Idrees when YOU are at fault?

Ahmad: what Idrees said is true and I am very sorry for that.

From the above little conversation, we can see that the pronoun YOU which qualifies Ahmad appears repetitively in ratio 8:1. The Idrees, who is the third person in the sentence, appears five times more than even Idrees the second person in ratio 5:1. We can logically conclude that it is only proper noun for Jesus (PBUH) that appears more frequenty than Prophet Muhammad and if we are to consider the pronouns referring to Prophet Muhammad in the Glorious Qur’an, it would out number that of Jesus (PBUH) In multiple fold.

Interestingly, Prophet Idrees (AS) (Enoch) is mentioned three times[1] in the Bible while Pharaoh is mentioned five times[2] in the Bible. If we may ask, can we because of this claim that Pharaoh is better or greater than Prophet Enoch in any way? Once again, the number of times name appears does not mean comparative in virtue or status.

To conclude, as for we the Muslims, we believe in the prophethood of Jesus (PBUH), his miraculous birth, his God-given power of miracle and his lofty status as one of the mighty prophets of Allah just the way we believe in other prophets of Allah as described in the Glorious Qur’an. Allah says, “say ye: “ we believe in Allah , and the revelation given to us, and to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus (PBUH), and that given to (all) prophets from their Lord: we make no difference between one and another of them: And we bow to Allah (in Islam).[3]
